Kampong Cham's best-known sites, the Bhavavarman I hilltop shrine Prasat Hanchey and the intact Jayavarman VII temple listed as Prasat Wat Nokor Bachey, (it has several alternative names), are located in the east of the province on the west bank of the Mekong. However, the majority of its plentiful ancient sites are situated within a wide V shape in the northwestern part of the province stretching from Kampong Cham City up to Cheung Prei District on the border of Kampong Thom and then southwest through Batheay District to Kandal.

Additional clusters, likely to correspond to ancient settlements, are also discernable in Chamkar Loeu District in the northeast and in and around Srey Santhor Town on the east bank of the Mekong. As with neighbouring Tboung Khmum Province, sites cover all Angkorian time periods and demonstrate occupation over a lengthy timeframe in most districts with the exception of the forested far northeast. The relative paucity of sites close to the Mekong - somewhat surprising at first glance - is certainly reflective of the extent of the monsoon floodplains.
