The far northwestern province of Oddor Meanchey contains a considerable number of ancient sites although their geographical distribution is highly uneven as the large majority of listings are squeezed into the western 3rd of the province with verified sites in the centre and east few and far between. The eastern reaches of the province include large tracts of forested hills so a low population density is to be expected. The few sites appear to correspond to the present-day east-west route 2648 which includes the now badly damaged arogyasala site of Prasat Trapeang Prasat Toch and which presumably represents one of the Angkor-period roads to Preah Vihear.

The western part of the province has its own ancient road with the famous route linking Phimai (Prasat Hin Phimai) with Angkor and including dharmasala sites at Prasat Prohm Kel and Prasat Ampil (Chhouk Chas) with Prasat Ta Muen situated just across the Thai border revealing the location of the pass through the Dandrek Range into present-day Buriram Province.

Nonetheless, it fails to explain the concentration of ancient sites in this western section which, while generally flat and low-lying, is far from being the most fertile land in Cambodia. (Some historical climatologists have suggested that the north of the country received higher rainfall in earlier times making it more attractive to Angkor-period settlement.)
