Note that in so far as Tboung Khmum has only existed as a separate province since 2014 many sources, including CISARK for instance, still list its various sites as belonging to Kampong Cham Province.

Ancient sites are split into 2 distinct groups with a large number of circular village sites located in the Memot area to the east of the province and a number of later, Angkorian, temples situated in the western region. Surprisingly, vestiges on the east bank of the Mekong are conspicuous by their absence.

Although systematically listed by CISARK, the numerous ancient villages - some moated some with earth embankments and often referred to as 'red earth sites' due to the laterite soils - generally date to prehistoric times and we're extremely sceptical about continued occupation - and indeed their relevance in general - to Angkor history.

The western temple sites are an eclectic group and, despite forming several distinct geographical clusters, cover a wide range of periods from Sambor Prei Kuk, through Kampong Preah into Bakheng and Prei Rup styles and later. The best known and most important is the site of Banteay Prei Nokor which probably corresponds to the ancient city of Indrapura. The settlement's history is complicated and still hotly debated.

The aforementioned clusters include a group in Kandal Chom District northeast of Banteay Prei Nokor and a concentration in Suong Town which extends southwest along the line of highway 73.
