Wat Damnak (វត្តដំណាក់ - Pronounced: Woit Dom-nakh)
Active Buddhist monastery in central Siem Reap Town which is reportedly located on an ancient temple site. A previous survey by CISARK recorded various sandstone blocks scattered around the wat grounds although we were unable to locate them on a recent visit and today there is no clear evidence of a pre-existing structure. Still in place however - at the western entrance to the main vihara - are a pair of eroded lion statues while CISARK also noted an inscribed block catalogued as K.420 and dating to the 11th century. We were also unable to locate this although a second inscription found there is now housed at the Angkor Conservancy.
The inscriptions reportedly originated from Angkor Thom before being deposited at Wat Damnak while the original provenance of the lions is unknown. (They may of course have been unearthed in situ.)
The wat's main structures are aligned to some 92 degrees and an ornamental pond to the east of the vihara may conceivably be a moat vestige although, in our opinion, the existence of an Angkorian temple here requires further confirmation.
