Site Size & Condition: Large Prasat Prasat Phnom Banan (ប្រាសាទភ្នំបាណន់ - Pronounced: Pra-saht P'nom Ba-non)

A sandstone and laterite temple set atop a steep wooded hill located approximately 20 kms south of Battambang Town. The site was originally consecrated by King Uttayadityavarman II in the 11th century, though what remains appears to be a Bayon-style temple which consists of a central tower surrounded by an enclosure wall housing 4 gopuras. The buildings are poorly built, apparently reusing materials from an earlier structure. There are also a couple of small cave shrines set into the hill plus a tiny laterite construction Prasat Phnom Banan Toch at the foot of the steep stairs Chandar Borann Prasat Phnom Banan. The stairs and entrance area at their foot have been reconstructed.

Some of the Buddhist iconography has been defaced, some not and an inscription found on site dates to 1287 indicating that post-Jayavarman VII alterations were also made. 2 other inscriptions found here have been dated to the 10th century which may be a clue to the date of the earlier structure. (All 3 inscriptions have reportedly since disappeared.)

Historically and architecturally confusing site along with a steep set of stairs to reach the summit but a worthwhile and picturesque site nonetheless.
