Prasat Ta Nei (ប្រាសាទតានៃ - Pronounced: Pra-saht Ta Nay) is to our minds the most attractive and interesting of the numerous 'minor' Jayavarman VII sites dotted around the Jayatataka. The wooded setting is picturesque and lack of crowds provides a feeling of remoteness even though the site - 1.3kms east of Angkor Thom, 1km north of Ta Keo, and some 300km south of the 'French Dam' on the Siem Reap River - is actually very central.
As with many sites, certain sections remain relatively intact and others in a dilapidated state although several interesting and well-preserved lintels can still be seen. The temple was certainly commenced during the Jayavarman VII period and displays many classic Bayon-style features but was upgraded and extended at a later date. (Possibly Indravarman II.)
Only an eastern gopura remains of an outer enclosure and south and north moats no longer retain water. Entrance causeways with cruciform terraces stretch east and west from an inner area enclosed by a laterite wall with small north, south and west gopuras. The eastern entrance is part of a rectangular gallery surrounding the main shrine, library and small eastern pavilion as well as an additional, unusual pavilion on the north side connecting with the gallery. Several Jataka scenes are displayed on lintels and pediments, some defaced, others not and typical devatas and tapestry reliefs can still be seen.
A delightful and often overlooked site.
