Small albeit strategically located province situated north and west of Ayutthaya and south of Singburi, while Suphanburi lies immediately west. The Chao Phraya River flows north-south through the eastern part of the province and most of the province consists of fertile, rice-growing lowlands.

At present, recorded Khmer-period vestiges in Ang Thong are negligable, comprising a solitary ancient settlement site Khu Muang (Ang Thong) and a wat, Wat Yang Luang Pho Suwan which houses a small collection of ancient artefacts. The aforementioned settlement shows evidence of habitation during the late 12th century, Bayon, period but it would be surprising - given the province's location - if there was no Khmer presence before that period and indeed even significant Mon/Dvaravati sites are conspicuous by their absence.

The small province does have a relatively high population density as well as being intensively cultivated so it is plausible this may account for the sparsity of ancient sites. It's also notable that 1,000 years ago, Ang Thong formed the upper limits of a large inlet of the Gulf of Thailand which subsequently silted up, so again it is conceivable that in earlier times the area featured swampy, coastal marshes as well as being liable to flooding. This may explain the profusion of ancient sites to the east and west - along the edges of the Chao Phraya Valley - and the limited sites on lower ground.
