Another remote province consisting largely of forested uplands which, to our knowledge, boast the grand total of one confirmed ancient temple site. The unique site, listed simply as Tuol, is situated in the far north of the province close to Ratanakiri while a second site, Phnom Tang Yu, recorded by French archaeologist Henri Parmentier back in 1913, has not been found since.

Along with 2 rather vague inscription sites, this completes the totality of listings for Mondulkiri although with extensive forest cover still existent it is reasonable to speculate on as yet unrecorded sites coming to light.

The province features no practicable routes to the east while early population centres in the Mekong Valley such as Thala Borivat and Sambhupura lie far to the west so the region probably served merely as a source of exotic products (and manpower) for both the Khmers to the west and Chams to the east.
