Although administratively independent, Pathum Thani today comprises the northern suburbs of Bangkok's urban sprawl and - as is the case of the capital itself - was likely to have been entirely under the waters of the upper Gulf until relatively recent times. (A millennium or so ago the waters of the Gulf of Thailand stretched as far north as present-day Saraburi, Suphanburi and Lopburi with sedimentation from the Chao Phraya river system slowly but surely extending the coastline south over subsequent centuries.)

The province therefore features no ancient sites - either Khmer or Dvaravati - but does house several sites of interest in the form of its various museums. The Kanchanaphisek National Museum houses the national archives as well as containing ethnology and natural history collections and includes a significant number of important Khmer steles and inscriptions while the Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum houses a collection of ancient Khmer pottery. The huge Central Storage of National Museums is also situated in Pathum Thani and holds all artefacts not currently on display in the national museums. Artefacts from all historical periods including prehistoric, Dvaravati, Sukhothai, Lan Chang (Lan Xang), Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin as well as Khmer/Angkorian era objects are housed here and are said to number into the tens of thousands.

Note that while the former two listings are public museums we're uncertain, for now, as to public access to the Central Storage site.
