Even considering that nearly half of the province is mountainous, Uthai Thani displays scant potential Khmer sites or vestiges. The flat lowlands of the eastern half stretch as far as the Chao Phraya River and feature a number of Dvaravati and pre-Dvaravati settlements however, as with neighbouring provinces, the issue is determining the extent of the Khmer presence.

A 7th-century inscription does refer to a king Isanavarman - presumably the Chenla ruler at Sambor Prei Kuk - and Funan and early Chenla artefacts have been unearthed in some of the early settlement sites however whether these are indicative of a significant early Khmer presence or merely trade and/or client state status is debatable. Unlike neighbouring Nakhon Sawan and Chai Nat later, no 11th and 12th-century are confirmed either.
