As to be expected, and similarly to its northern neighbour Stung Treng, the majority of Kratie Province's ancient sites are found within a short distance of the Mekong River. The important early city of Sambhupura is situated just north of the present-day provincial capital. Dating to at least the 6th century the settlement was likely to have been Bhavavarman's subsequent step southwards after Thala Borivat and the city - which appears to have profited from several periods of independent or autonomous status - played an important role in Cambodia's early history.
Consequently, most of the province's listed sites are stretched out north and south of Sambhupura (present-day Sambor) with a few smaller sites located in valleys to the east including the 7th and 8th-century sites of Prasat Preah Theat Khvan Pi and Prasat Lbeuk Sraut respectively.
The solitary and remote site of Prasat Banteay Siem is a later, possibly Jayavarman VII, structure and is situated in the western part of the province and possibly corresponds to some form of ancient 'shortcut' as a series of valleys conveniently link the west bank of the Mekong near Sambor with the Sen River Valley and the region of modern-day Kampong Thom to the west.
