Site Size & Condition: Ancient Village Muang Kao (เมืองเก่า - Pronounced: Moo-ang Kow)

Moated ancient settlement with a roughly circular form measuring some 5-600m in diameter. The site today is largely covered in vegetation while traces of an inner moat (some water-filled sections still remain) indicate that the settlement was enlarged in a northerly direction at some stage in its history. An active Buddhist monastery, Wat Pa Si Mueang Kao (วัดป่าศรีเมืองเก่า), is situated in the southern sector of the enclosed area.

Apart from the sections of moat and earthen embankment, neither standing structures nor obvious vestiges are visible while images of the wat also fail to reveal any artefacts. The settlement is Dvaravati in origin and presumably occupied into the Khmer period although we are unaware of the specific criteria which earned a listing on the CISARK website.
