Muang Kao (เมืองเก่า - Pronounced: Moo-ang Yang)
Another moated settlement in the northeastern part of the province - an area that shows a high concentration of similar sites and clearly had a significant population density in early times. Muang Bua (Muang Yang) sits just over 1 km due east while Non Sa-at is 600m southwest, Muang Phai Noi is 3km due north and Non Raka 2.5 km southeast. There is a large number of additional, as well as unconfirmed and smaller, unlisted settlements in the region. The area was undoubtedly an important agricultural one in Dvaravati and Khmer times, as it is today.
Muang Kao displays a well-preserved circular moat enclosing an area of some 400m x 600m as well as a secondary, moated extension to the south. The size of the site suggests it formed an important settlement and possibly regional centre, over an extended period. Although the village and its immediate vicinity appear to be listed no less than three times on the CISARK website, (2578, 1826 and possibly 6367) the listings are undescribed and we're uncertain as to which specific features they correspond to. As is often the case in this region, CISARK's information may date back as far as the early French explorers and while some vestiges and or artefacts were possibly existent 100 years ago, we're unaware of any today.
