Muang Kao Wat Pa Khu (วัดป่าคูเมืองเก่า - Pronounced: Moo-ang Kow Wot Pa Koo)
Well-defined, egg-shaped, moated settlement today occupied by the grounds of the active Buddhist monastery Wat Khu Mueang Kao Samnak Patibattham. The relativley small area - approximately 220m x 400m at its widest points - is nonetheless enclosed by a double moat and three embankments of which the east, north and northwestern sections are still largely intact. The majority of the enclosed area is covered by the wooded grounds of the wat.
Photos of the wat feature some rectangular blocks although it is unclear if these are ancient or of recent date and the wat's status as an ancient sanctuary site is unconfirmed.
The excellent state of preservation of the site suggests that it was likely to have been occupied into at least the Khmer period and indeed Prasat Hin Phanom Wan is situated a short distance southwest while Vimayapura, (Phimai) sits to the northeast so the region was clearly one of some importance during the Khmer administration. This requires confirmation however and a corresponding baray is noticeably absent.
