Site Size & Condition: Unconfirmed Site Size & Condition: Reservoir T27143 (ไม่ทราบชื่อ)

Another intriguing, and we feel, promising feature situated between the new Thai-Cambodia Friendship Bridge access road and the present-day border itself. The feature corresponds to a large rectangular area, measuring some 300m x 500m, aligned at approximately 86-87 degrees and surrounded by tree-covered dykes. A moat is possible but unconfirmed and requires on-the-ground verification. The presence or otherwise of the latter would consequently confirm whether the site corresponds to a reservoir or enclosed settlement area.

Apart from the probable (but unverified) ancient temple site T27144, which abuts the southeastern corner, no obvious vestiges are discernable inside or adjacent to the rectangular area. It would certainly be interesting to ask local farmers if indeed any vestiges or structures had been discovered on the site, otherwise, their absence would seem to point to a reservoir rather than a settlement. Conversely, the presence of a large baray ought to correspond to a substantial nearby settlement which is also conspicuous by its absence. Although the farmland within the rectangle does not appear to be lower than adjacent areas, many large barays were simply constructed by using embankments to trap water and were not excavated as such.

As the interior of the feature is today dry, and indeed is bisected east-west by Highway 3511, if the site is a reservoir we feel it is clearly an ancient one. Conclusive evidence would be provided by the identification or elimination of a surrounding moat so, until that time, we'll remain on the fence.

Note that both this site and T27144 are very close to the border and we'd suggest access may well be problematic.
