Site Size & Condition: Medium Ruin Wat Nakhon Kosa (วัดนครโกษา - Pronounced: Wot Na-korn Ko-sa)

Small but eclectic collection of ruins adjacent to the railway line just south of San Phra Kan. The site features the lower section of a large Dvaravati-era brick chedi, the vestiges of an Ayutthaya-era vihara and a partially intact Khmer-style tower. We said 'Khmer-style' since, as with the case of nearby Prang Khaek, the brickwork, stucco elements and indeed bricks themselves are atypical of Khmer constructions. Whether the unusually thin bricks or the use of mortar instead of the standard Khmer vegetal glue can be put down to local workers and building methods is open to debate. As Suryavarman I might have said; 'you just can't get the staff these days', and he may have had to deal with local, Mon, brick kilns and workers as he sought to put his stamp on his newly acquired early 11th-century domain. (More likely this is simply a result of Ayutthaya-period restoration.)

Overall the site corresponds to a Dvaravati Buddhist chedi, extended by the Khmers during the 11th century (?) with the addition of a Hindu shrine and then renovated and converted into a Buddhist structure during the 14th-century, Ayutthaya period. Some carved, sandstone blocks can be seen on the ground nearby and may correspond to elements of the Khmer makeover.

No traffic here but you still have to look out for the cheeky monkeys.
