Site Size & Condition: Wat Wat Suphannarat (วัดสุพรรณรัตน์ - Pronounced: Woit Soo-pan'na-rohd)

A Thai Buddhist temple 5 km south of Phu Fai is the location a beautiful lintel unearthed at Prasat Phu Fai. It was originally slated for the Phimai National Museum although the Thai Fine Arts Department relented under pressure from locals and now it's cemented to a wall in the back corner of the wat. This remarkably well-preserved lintel features Vishnu reclining on the naga Ananta (Shesha), although the rather unusual art-style is difficult to date with precision. To our untrained eye, Baphuon period would seem an obvious choice although expert archaeologists are still debating the issue as indeed they still debate the Phu Fai hilltop vestiges. It’s 185 cm long, 31 to 32 cm thick and 47 cm tall. Mounting bevels on both ends reduce the length of the front to about 163 cm. There are two circular placement holes on the back. It’s made of fine-grained grey sandstone with no small pebbles. This material is similar to stone found at other sites in this area but distinctly different than the local sandstone.

A round colonette, presumably also from Phu Fai, is located in the room directly behind the lintel. It’s 21 cm in diameter and 76 cm tall with carvings over most of curved surface. Colonettes are not unusual at Khmer sites but the carvings on this one are distinctive.
