Wat Tham Noem Phra Prang (วัดถ้ำเนินพระปรางค์ - Pronounced: Wot Tam Nern Pa Prang)
The grounds of this active Buddhist monastery, located on the left bank of the Nan River - a short distance upstream from the provincial capital - houses an unrestored, and apparently unexcavated brick mound. The tree-covered mound features a large quantity of bricks amongst which are two concrete spirit shrines of recent construction.
While the ruins of an Ayutthaya-period chedi spring to mind at first glance there are reports that quantities of laterite blocks were removed from the site at an earlier date and recycled for use elsewhere. (According to older, local residents this appears to have been a major operation and they recount elephants being used to dismantle the structure in order to access the laterite blocks. Furthermore, the title prang in the name is usually used to refer to a Khmer-style tower although, overall, evidence is inconclusive and some excavation and verification by the TFAD is required.
