Site Size & Condition: Reservoir Nong Bua Rai (หนองบัวราย - Pronounced:Nawng Boo-a Lai)

Nong Bua Rai is the contemporary name for this large reservoir situated at the foot of the eastern slope of Phanom Rung although there is epigraphical evidence that the original name was Sri Surya. (1) (Since such a large baray along with accompanying arogyasala on its south bank, (Kuti Ruesi Ban Nong Bua Rai), was presumably associated with a significant-sized settlement it is plausible that the name also describes the Angkorian settlement.)

The intact feature measures 400m x 800m with an alignment, very slightly off the east-west axis, of some 88 degrees. A prolongation of Prasat Phanom Rung's monumental entranceway would appear to meet the baray's western embankment on or close to its central point although nothing remains today of this presumed extended section.

The aforementioned arogyasala sits some 100m south of the southwest corner while Prasat Ban Bu is situated approximately 1400m further east. As the steep slopes of Phanom Rung would have been unsuitable for settlement construction, the important Khmer town associated with the sanctuary undoubtedly lay in the area of the baray. (In so far as the original name is unconfirmed we've listed the settlement as Ban Nong Bua Rai.)

(1) Phanom Rung Inscription #`14 contains an edict by Suryavarman II for the construction of the baray named Sri Surya.
