Site Size & Condition: Ancient City Phnom Oudong (ភ្នំឧដុង្ - Pronounced: P'nom Oo-dong)

In 1601 King Srei Soryapor founded a new city at this now famous site, situated some 30kms north of Phnom Penh, after the previous capital of Banteay Longvek was abandoned. The hill and its immediate surroundings subsequently served as Cambodia's capital and royal residence until the arrival of the French in the 1860s. Over the course of these 250 years, a succession of kings added and extended the site, notably King Ang Duong who commissioned canals, bridges, terraces and a large number of pagodas to be constructed in the vicinity.

However, these 17th to 19th-century rulers were far from the first to select this highly distinctive sandstone outcrop as a sacred site and there is plentiful evidence of a Pre-Angkorean, and Angkorean, presence. Laterite foundations, fragments of sandstone blocks and a brick tuol (1) are also visible on the hill's summit while 2 excellently-preserved lintels originating on Phnom Oudong are currently displayed at the National Museum of Cambodia. The lintel style is that of the late 7th to early 8th century, Prei Khmeng period and confirms the existence of sanctuaries on the site from early times.

Unfortunately the much-tweaked hilltop today reveals no definite foundations of specific ancient sites although still-standing, more recent, structures are as follows:

Preah Nipean (Kandal) contains a reclining Buddha atop a laterite ruin.

Chedei Preah Baht Chan Reachea a brick stupa believed to have been built by Preah Baht Borominto Reachea for his father.

Vihear Ta Sann a small mosque.

Chedei Preah Eiso

Vihear Preah Ko Preah Keo two shrines housing Preah Ko and Preah Keo.

Chedei Mchas Pindara

Vihear Preah Ang

Neak Ta Dambang Daek (Chey Utdom) a shrine housing Ta Dambang Daek.

Chedei Mokh Prohm a large stupa that has four spaces looking out in all cardinal directions.

Chedei Preah Ang Duong a large stupa that has unique plastered ceramic.

Chedei Damrei Sam Poan a large stupa that copies its architectural elements from the stupas in Sukhothai.

Chedei Sisowath Monivong

Chedei Sisowath Barotia

Chedei Tontim

(1) It isn't actually clear whether the brick tuol represents an early tower or perhaps later, collapsed stupa.
