Site Size & Condition: Medium Ruin Prasat Kuk Srei (ប្រាសាទគុកស្រី - Pronounced: Pra-saht Kook Sray)

The sandstone and laterite ruins situated east of the eastern embankment of the Baray Prasat Neak Buos form an outlying structure of the principal sanctuary Prasat Neak Buos located some 800m further north. The vestiges consist of a laterite enclosure measuring 40 square metres, with small east and west gopuras, housing a U-shaped, khleang-style building. The latter has a sandstone base and lower courses with laterite above. The ruins fills the northern half of the enclosure, while the southern section is now empty and may have featured additional structures in perishable materials. The building is today in very poor condition but otherwise closely resembles the northeastern walled enclosure at nearby Prasat Thnal Svay (Kok Chrolong).

Such features are ubiquitous at important sanctuaries during the 11th century in particular and are often sited to the north of the entrance causeway, as seen at Prasat Phanom Rung or as a symmetrical pair in the case of Wat Phu. (Prasat Hin Phimai's khleang lies to the west due to the temple's southern orientation.) Although their precise function is still undetermined, they clearly served some form of reception or preparation purpose. In this case, the unusually long distance between Kuk Srei and the main prasat at Neak Buos is probably due to the sloping terrain between the two sites.

The ruins are officially labelled as Prasat Neak Buos South East, however, most locals know it as Prasat Kuk or Prasat Kuk Srei.
