Site Size & Condition: Medium Prasat Prasat Plaibat I (ปราสาทปลายบัด 1 - Pronounced: Pra-saht Ply-bat Neung)

Due to extensive restoration, Plaibat 1 is today the best preserved of the two ancient sanctuaries built atop the wooded hill Khao Plaibat, situated in the southern central sector of the province. As with Phanom Rung, which lies some 6 kms due north, the hill began life as a volcanic cone. Site 1 is also the more recent of the two sanctuaries, being built around the middle of the 11th century whilst Site 2, situated approximately 1200m to the west-northwest has been precisely dated to 921 due to a foundation inscription having been unearthed nearby. (1)

Prior to the recent TFAD restoration work, only a sandstone doorframe with some surrounding brickwork was standing although now, the intact lower section of a largely sandstone tower can be seen, situated on a rectangular laterite platform aligned north-south, with an accompanying laterite 'library'. Foundations of a second, annex structure - possibly a fire shrine - are discernable to the southeast although no traces of an enclosing wall are present today. The small complex's orientation is 80 degrees, in contrast to the east-west alignment of Site 2.

Some sections of pediment, along with eroded lintels and octagonal colonettes can also be seen in situ. The art style is considered to be Baphuon or possibly late Khleang.

(1) Questions remain over exactly where this inscribed stele was found although since Plaibat 1 is clearly later in style to shrine 2 the inscription is generally accepted to refer to the latter site.
