Site Size & Condition: Large Prasat Prasat Pre Rup (ប្រាសាទប្រែរូប - Pronounced: Pra-saht Pray Roop)

Is the largest of numerous Rajendravarman-period sites constructed in this area and was consecrated in 961-2 as the royal temple of the king. The pyramid-style temple lay just to the south of the East Baray, aligned due south of another Rajendravarman site, the Prasat East Mebon.

The pyramid is 50m square at its base, has 3 steps culminating in a 5 (brick) tower central complex and totals some 35m in height with the main entrance situated to the east. The narrow 2nd step contains no constructions while 12 additional brick towers adorn the lower level. Butting on to the outer enclosure is a series of narrow laterite pavilions, reminiscent of Bakheng style and a precursor to the continuous galleries to be introduced a few years later during the Jayavarman V period. Wide steps on each side, bordered by lion figures, lead up the pyramid.

A moat surrounding the pyramid's base is dry for most of the year and the modern access road lies over the eastern side and original entrance causeway. Laterite, brick and sandstone were employed and while many lintels are in good condition, many remain unfinished.

The pyramid's height and clear view to the west make Pre Rup a popular sunset site.

The stele inscription that was found at one of the long houses at Pre Rup is catalogued as K.806 and is now housed at the National Museum of Cambodia.
