Site Size & Condition: Small Tuol Wat Kandal (វត្តកណ្ដាល - Pronounced: Wot Kan-dal)

Active Buddhist monastery situated close to the right bank of the Sangkar, opposite the central part of Battambang city. A sandstone pedestal bearing a short, one-line inscription in ancient Khmer and dated to the early part of the 11th century is noted by the EFEO as originating in Wat Kandal although it's unclear if it was unearthed here or was merely housed in the wat when French archaeologists first recorded its existence. (The artefact is also described as having been subsequently moved to Wat Po Veal although this also requires confirmation.)

We haven't come across any additional artefacts originating from the wat and whether the pedestal alone confirms the site as being the location for an ancient sanctuary is a matter of conjecture. The principal wat structures are east-facing and aligned to some 85 degrees but vestiges or ancient traces - such as a moat for example - are not readily discernable. However, the site is listed on the CISARK website and, as is the case with many Battambang wats, such vestiges may well have been present in former times.
