Muang Sankhaburi (เมืองสรรคบุรี - Pronounced: Moo-wang San-ka-bouree)
Extensive ancient city site covering a substantial area of the modern-day riverside town of the same name. It presumably includes sites north of the town centre such as the Sukhothai-period ruins at Wat Tanod Lai and Wat Song Phi Nong as well as Wat Mahathat (Chai Nat), Wat Na Mahathat and Wat Phraya Phraek in the town centre. Scattered brick ruins, again apparently dating to the Sukhothai and possibly early Ayuthaya periods, stretch along the riverbank south of town and include such sites as Wat Thakay Nai, Wat Thakay Yok and Wat Noi on the eastern bank.
While the Noi River provided the eastern limit of the settlement traces of a moat are still discernable to the west running alongside the modern-day highway 3454 which bypasses the town centre. The town council has also seen fit to rebuild some sections of brick walls - visible to the west and south of the town - although we are unable to confirm if their placement is historically accurate or not. The walls have been recently constructed in an Ayuthaya style.
Many of the wats within the settlement area have revealed Dvaravati and Khmer artefacts and it would appear that an important town in the area was occupied from early Dvaravati times through to at least the Ayuthaya period. Note this also incorporates our proposed Khmer temple site of Wat Tha Sao.
Wat Mahathat houses extensive vestiges and artefacts including the splendid Khmer lintels whose precise provenance (and authenticity) are undetermined.
