Si Liam (สี่เหลี่ยม - Pronounced: See-liam)
Intact reservoir site with an isolated location amid extensive farmland to the south of Muang Du (Prathai) ancient settlement and Prasat Muang Du. The site measures some 70m x 140m with an orientation of 85 degrees so corresponds very closely to typical Khmer baray specifications although no obvious vestiges are discernable to its immediate west.
A curious inverted 'L' shaped body of water is discernable on the north side of the reservoir although traces of embankments suggest it was originally part of a similar, rectangular reservoir possibly predating its intact neighbour. The two features are of similar size although the dry one is aligned to 80 rather than 85 degrees. This is a commonly seen phenomenon and presumably occurs where siltation or damage to banks makes it easier to construct a new reservoir than to repair the existing one.
Constructing small reservoirs is a relatively easy task as it involved raising banks to trap rainy season water rather than the extensive excavation of the site to any great depth. As earth for the embankments would have been dug up as close as possible this explains why reservoirs are often deeper around their edges and why many now dry reservoirs still display this internal moat-like feature. (The mebon temple Noen Wat Khok at Phimai is a good example of this as, while situated within the, now dry, baray a deeper surrounding trench gives the appearance of a moat.)
