Angkor National Museum (សារមន្ទីរជាតិអង្គរ Pronounced: Sa-rak-mon-ti Jiet Ang-kor) located on the route to Angkor, just north of Siem Reap Town centre is a state of the art, purpose-built, museum opened in Nov. 2007. The extensive collection, covering the early Chenla period up until the 14th-century, was sourced from the Cambodian National Museum in Phnom Penh as well from the estimated 6,000 stored objects of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture via the Ecole Francais D'extreme Orient, (EFEO). (Note then that the displayed objects in the museum are just a tiny part of what is stored away in warehouses.)

Presentation and multi-lingual explanations are excellent and although entry price is a steep $12 (last time we looked) it is essential viewing for anyone with an interest in Kmer history. For first time visitors, we'd recommend visiting some of the temple sites themselves first, to provide some kind of perspective and context, and we'd allow at least 1.30 minutes to 2 hrs for a comprehensive tour.

Site Size & Condition: Museum Angkor National Museum (សារមន្ទីរជាតិអង្គរ Pronounced: Sa-rak-mon-ti Jiet Ong-kor) located on the route to Angkor, just north of Siem Reap Town centre is a state of the art, purpose-built, museum opened in Nov. 2007. The extensive collection, covering the early Chenla period up until the 14th-century, was sourced from the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh as well from the estimated 6,000 stored objects of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture via the Ecole Francais D'extreme Orient, (EFEO). (Note then that the displayed objects in the museum are just a tiny part of what is stored away in warehouses.)

Presentation and multi-lingual explanations are excellent and although entry price is a steep $12 (last time we looked) it is essential viewing for anyone with an interest in Khmer history. For first time visitors, we'd recommend visiting some of the temple sites themselves first, to provide some kind of perspective and context, and we'd allow at least 1.30 minutes to 2 hrs for a comprehensive tour.
