U Taphao (อู่ตะเภา - Pronounced: Oo Ta-pow)
Moated and earth-walled Dvaravati settlement containing several earthen mounds or tuols - some of which include laterite blocks - but lacking any standing vestiges. The moat is today dry and the enclosed area is now agricultural land. Archaeological surveys carried out by the Fine Arts Department in 1988 and 1990 confirmed continuous occupation of the site from pre-Dvaravati times up until the Ayuthaya period.
Several contemporary settlements are situated within a relatively short radius - e.g. Khlong Muai, Dong Khon, Bang Phra and Pai Kwang - and archaeologists have speculated that U Taphao may have formed the centre of a mandala-style polity. Significant iron-ore deposits have also been identified in the area as well as evidence of ancient smelting so U Tapao ancient city would likely have been an important site well into the Lopburi and Khmer eras.
